NEW IMAGE EDITOR ADDED - 02/09/10

A new image editor is now available when Classmates upload photos. The editor shows up automatically whenever you go to add or edit photos on your personal profile page. It looks like this:

In terms of uploading the system works exactly like the last uploader (I.E. just Browse, Select Photos, then Upload). What's new here is:

1) Now Classmates can add captions to images right during the upload and editing process. Previously you had to upload your photos and then go back in to add capations after the fact. It's much more seamless now.

2) Classmates can now make edits to their images with some very simple control sliders. It's easy to adjust redeye, brightness, contrast, rotate, crop, add text over an an image, etc. If you've had issues with Classmates uploading crooked images, images scans with excessive white space around the images, etc., now all of this can be easily fixed in a few seconds without having to download any stand-alone image editing software.

Hi Cindy,

Happy to hear you have the book, and even happier to learn you have access to fresh crab in Oregon.

My kids and I have spent many a day vacationing in Rockaway Beach, Oregon where we rented a house for a few days each summer. We'd go crabbing at the mouth of the Nehalem River just north of Rockaway Beach, OR, where we would rent a skiff and buy bait. Our best outing was at the Jetty Fishery, where one morning we hauled in over 30 (legal keeper) crabs in two hours. As you probably know, you have to throw back at least 10 crabs for every one you get to keep, because out of all the crabs you catch, the majority are typically females, and we can only keep the male crabs. That's a lot of backbreaking work hauling up heavy crab traps, but it was sure worth it. What I really like about crab fishing in Oregon is that the daily limit is 10 crabs per person per day, whereas in Washington, it's only 5 crabs. Plus, the size requirements for keeper crab in OR is slightly smaller than it is here in Washington. Which means we reach our goal much more quickly in OR.

We had so much fun preparing many of the recipes in that book - it was a total blast.

Kevin - thanks for sharing your crab recipes. Steve and I share your love of crab and fortunately live where it can be obtained fresh. My mother lives in North Carolina and sometimes plans her visits around Dungeness season (which begins here in Oregon on December 1st).

REUNION COMMITTEE AND FUTURE EVENTS. Lori, Rich and I will continue on as the Reunion Committee along with Cecelia, Carolyn & Mark. We are excited and eager about planning the "CLASS OF 1969 TURNS 60!" celebration in Las Vegas in less than two years. UPDATE ON VIRGINIA O'HAGAN. Those who attended our reunion on August 1st will recall former SCHS teacher Virginia O'Hagan who I paid tribute to at dinner. At about 7:15am on Sunday August 9th, Virginia fell and cracked her right femur. She was operated on this past Wednesday (08/12/09) and is now recovering at a rehab facility in Los Altos. I spoke with her today, and she seems as sharp as ever. If you'd like to send her an email, please drop her a line - I'm sure she's love to hear from you (she is listed at the bottom of the "Classmates Profile" page as a Guest member).

NEW FORUM: TECH TIPS. Many times we run into tech tools that most of us can use online. These tools make our online life easier and more efficient. So now you can share some of those tips with your classmates. The first tech tip is for an open source (ie, free) Instant Messenging management tool called "Miranda." It allows you to see and respond to all of your IM messages from different IM sources in just one window. Just head on over to the SCHS69 FORUMS link on the left side of this page to get started. And don't be shy about adding more tips!

REUNION ATTENDEE LIST. Many of you have requested a copy of the reunion attendee list from last weekend. There are two ways you can access this list:

1) You can download it from the "SPECIAL POSTINGS" forum (just click on the "SCHS69 FORUMS" link on the left side of this page). The list is formatted using Adobe PDF so everyone can read it on a pc or MAC. Please read Kevin's forum post for instructions on obtaining the free and safe PDF reader software.

2) You can click on the "Classmate Profiles" link on the left and then select the list of reunion attendees. Please note the following modifications to both of these lists:

Classmates on the list who did not attend the reunion include: Bruce Lamka, Brent Dyck, Bob Crane, Kirk Gallaway, Stephen Dunn.

Harvest Grape Cake

Makes one 9-inch cake…Champaign grapes and turbinado sugar available at New Seasons (in Oregon the grapes are available in Aug-early Sept)

You can use any type of sweet red- or black-skinned grape, especially champagne grapes (the Black Corinth or Zante variety). If you use extra large grapes, cut them in half width-wise.

Ingredients

· 2 eggs

· 2/3 cup granulated sugar

· 1/3 cup whole or low-fat milk

· 1/4 cup melted butter

· 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

· 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

SIFT TOGETHER

· 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

· 3/4 cup ground almonds (“Just Almonds” from Trader Joe’s)

· 3/4 teaspoon baking power

· Pinch of salt

· Zest of 1 lemon

· 1 1/2 C plus 1/2 C flavorful seedless grapes

· 2 to 3 tablespoons coarse or turbinado sugar for topping

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place rack in center position.

Butter and flour a 9-inch springform pan or round cake pan and set aside.

IN FOOD PROCESSOR or using electric beater and a large bowl:

· Beat the eggs and sugar until thick, about 3 minutes.

· Add milk, melted butter, oil and vanilla. Blend until combined.

IN A MED BOWL:

· Sift together flour, ground almonds, baking powder and salt.

· Add the lemon zest, tossing it to make sure it is well-distributed.

INTO FOOD PROCESSOR or large bowl:

· Gradually add the flour mixture into the wet ingredients until combined.

· Allow batter to sit for 10 minutes to make sure the flour has absorbed the liquids.

INTO A LARGE BOWL:

· Pour 1 1/2 cups grapes into empty bowl, OR

· Pour batter over the grapes and mix.

INTO PREPARED SPRING-FORM PAN

· Pour batter

· Bake for 15 minutes,

· Remove from oven and top with reserved grapes and 2 to 3 tablespoons coarse sugar.

· Return cake to oven and bake for an additional 40 minutes, until the top is golden and springy.

· Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes.

Use a knife to loosen the cake from the side of the pan. Remove the side of the springform pan and let the cake cool to room temperature.

The only thing I ask is that your advice must be "street legal," no hacking or pirating tips or the like -- any posts that urges classmates to conduct illegal activity will be deleted from this forum.

Hi Frank,

I appreciate your comments, and here is my response.

First, I fully agree with you that the personal information of our classmates should NOT be in the hands of just one person, which is why I am proposing that we need a team of 5 administrators to share the load. On the other hand, there also needs to be some guidance for our web site admins to give them some direction about how to best manage our site - which is why I'm proposing that we need to create a Charter.

And secondly, yes, we absolutely need admins to respect and give thoughtful regard for how our classmate data is managed, and who will fully support the rules contained in the site Charter. Our classmates trust us to manage their data appropriately, and in that context, there are some important rules we need to be observing. I've had some recent discussions with some classmates about this, and it has become clear to me that we need to establish some rules.

You can be sure that all of this is of paramount importance to me, and I only hope that other classmates will join with me in this much-needed effort.

Over the last few months I have appreciated all the hard work that the reunion committee has put in to make this website and the reunion such a success. I was one of the first people to post on this site and have seen it grow and blossom over the months. I would be honored to help all of you continue with the hard work that all of you have already put in.

I do not have alot of computer experience, but I do have a computer with the required software. I also have many years of experience serving on the board of directors of a non-profit preschool, were I helped to revise the by-laws. I have also been the President of a small business, were I was responsible for all the administrative details. Currently I am the Billing Manager for a Cardiology practice were I must abid by all the HIPPA privacy rules and regulations.

I am not retired, but neither do I have children living at home, therefore I believe I do have the required time available. Also I am sure I can get along with the current group of people doing the work since I have know many of them since kindergarten. My only concern is that I do live in far off Phoenix and would not be able to travel to the Bay Area more than once or twice a year.

I feel that the best way I can help is on the phone or on the computer searching for and contacting people. If I can be of any help please let me know.

Hi Kevin: I appreciate your thoroughness in the preparation of your Forum posting and suggestion for site administration assistance with a charter. I am concerned about having personal information in one person's hands at any one time. We need TRUST in the project administrators to respect personal information and not to invade privacy. A charter does seem to be necessary such that people would have some recourse if they are discontented or find infractions by administrators. Definitelly need some groundrules. For that reason, I would suggest that there not be just one administrator at any one time. Rotational status is fine but no one person cannot do all the tasks for any length of time. Can you team it? I am not volunteering my assistance as I am not an IT person but it worries me as to what a little power and information can do in the wrong hands. Again, we need to be assured of the security of information or the project will fail because no one will be interested in posting to it. I do appreciate all the work that you and the committee put in to this. I am sure that tensions and expectations of the committee ran high up to and including the night of the reunion. This too shall pass. Let's not let drama, egos and personalities overshadow the goals of the project. Ya all done good.

New web site Charter proposed

Hello classmates,

I'm posting this note to let you know that I've decided to initiate something I believe is very important and much needed for managing this web site on your behalf. Please note the following items, and then respond as you feel led.

ADMINS - Most of you have indicated your appreciation of this web site, and we are all gratified to know how valuable and useful this site has proven to be for you. However, maintaining this web site requires the support of much more than just one or two people. The best way I can think of to lighten the load is to share the responsibility for administering this site between 5 web site admins to keep things running smoothly. I know that many of you think working as an admin requires a lot of specialized technical knowledge and skills - but that's really not the case for many of the tasks associated with this site. Almost anyone with the desire to learn and has internet access can function as an admin for this site. If 5 admins are willing to step forward and share the responsibility for keeping this site going, then it will not be a huge burden for any of them. Some of the activities requiring admin support include:

1. Researching and locating classmates who have not yet joined our site

2. Maintaining photos and spreadsheet list of names for the Class Photo Archive

3. Developing new products for classmates (ie, Calendars, videos, etc.)

4. Managing the site forums

5. Event Coordination - for reunions, special events, and etc.

6. Bug fixes and site enhancements management

7. Updating the FAQ page and developing tutorials for classmates

8. Managing the day-to-day actions needed to keep classmates informed and keep this site running

Each of these admins in turn may work with small teams of other classmates who would like to contribute to, work on, and further develop these activities. Based on my involvement with this site so far, I am estimating that site admins will need to be available for between 5-8 hours each week on average (sometimes less), depending in part on the speed of your modem and the current demand for attention to any of these tasks.

Currently, my thinking is that each admin would serve for a term of one year before either retiring or running for re-election.

The qualifications for being an admin are not difficult and do not require that you be a technical guru, in fact, anyone can be trained to work on any of the tasks and activities we need to manage. The main requirement would be having having a decent computer with internet access and the time and interest to help us manage two or more of the tasks I've listed above. Some tasks will require you to have either Microsoft Word or Excel installed on your computer. Other than that, you just need to be pro-active and available.

CHARTER - To ensure that site admins work together in harmony and according to industry accepted best practices, I am initiating the development of a Charter document which will spell out the goals of this web site as well as the rules and guidelines each admin must adhere to. I am looking for people who would be interested in working with me to develop this charter. Once drafted, I would then like to publish it for review and feedback from all our classmates. The final Charter would then be adopted and put in place, followed by the nomination and election of web site administrators who agree to uphold the Charter.

If you have an interest in working with me to develop the charter for this web site, and/or working as a functional admin, please let me know. This is your web site, and it will require both the charter and at least 5 willing admins to make it work. In addition to myself, we have been fortunate enough to have the services of Lori Bulanti (Lovelace), Ellen Dickinson (Campbell), and Rich Stone working as site admins leading up to our recent reunion. Now that the reunion is over, it's time to provide some much needed structure to our site via a Charter document, and then elect our site admins.

I'm thinking that admins should be elected from a field of prospective candidates by a majority vote from our classmates, and that a total of at least 50 votes (yes or no) should be cast to validate their election results. Less than 50 votes cast would not be enough to validate the voting results for any admin candidate. The voting process can be facilitated directly on this web site by using the polling feature.

I realize this approach may seem a bit more formal and structured than some of you might think it should be, however, experience has taught me that a Charter is very much needed to provide guidance for our admins to ensure that subjective influences do not govern, prevail, or otherwise overrule best practices for web site administration. Maintaining this web site does require adherence to a modicum of best practices to ensure that it runs appropriately and in the best interest of all classmates. Putting a Charter in place with admins who agree to support it is really the best way I can see to ensure the best possible results for the support of this web site. I would like to stress to you that I believe this action is vital to the ongoing success of this web site, so please give your careful and thoughtful consideration to whether you would like to help develop the Charter, participate as an admin, and also be prepared to cast your vote when the time comes.

So, please let me know your thoughts on this in the coming days, and how you would like to help keep this site the best one of it's kind anywhere. I look forward to hearing from you.
